Beautiful, energetic, and intelligent! Leah is a petite 9-month-old female mix with gorgeous brindle color on her face and legs. In her previous home, Leah loved playing with her canine brother, a german shepherd dog, and living with her foster mom’s two children- she even got to sleep in their beds. Due to medical reasons, her previous owner was not able to exercise Leah, so Leah took matters into her own paws and decided it would be fun to escape through screen doors to chase rabbits and squirrels. Since coming to live with us, Leah has really gotten the hang of this ‘walking on a leash’ business. Her martingale collar helps us control her pulling when she becomes excited about other dogs and she sits when asked. She accompanies her foster mom on morning jogs, but she prefers nice long walks with plenty of time to take in all the fun smells. Like a hound dog, she often trots along with her nose to the ground, following scents. She will even point towards the tree where the squirrel has gone. Like a true goof-ball, Leah does need the occasional reminder to look up when she’s following a scent, or she may walk right into things! Leah has also learned to go hiking with us and loved to swim with her previous owner. Leah is housetrained, although she has had the occasional ‘excited’ accident when she is very happy to see you. She has also learned crate training, and will go right in her crate when asked (in exchange for a special treat!) Leah no longer spends her nights crated, although she often chooses to go to bed in her crate with her favorite bone and blanket if foster mom and dad stay up too late. She does have some issues with separation anxiety and prefers not to be left alone. Although much improved, she does bark when left alone and if left uncrated/alone for extended periods of time she does chew and may reorganize the contents of your trashcans for you. Bones, antlers, and toys that she can roll around for treats keep her occupied for shorter periods of time alone uncrated. She likes to be in the same room as her people, and will make sure you are never lonely- in the kitchen, doing chores, even in the bathroom! Leah enjoys being brushed, vacuumed, sharing a spoonful of peanut butter, and playing with other dogs. She can be handled while eating, and toys and food can be taken from her without any aggression. She does not beg at the table and likes to cruise in the car with the sunroof open. She happily accepts pats on the head from strangers when she’s out on the town. She does well with dog-savvy cats, but chases our shy cat who runs and zig-zags by her. She would benefit from a nice fenced yard where she can spend time following smells and running off-leash, and a family that is home a lot.
