Saint Bernard : : Female (spayed) Learn more about the Saint Bernard.
Scarlett, our St. Bernard puppy, had her Cardiologist Consult appointment on Tuesday and we have stable but not so great news. She has been diagnosed with mild-moderate subaortic valvular stenosis, a condition where a fibrous tissue ring has formed at the top of the left ventricle, just below the Aortic valve, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood through the narrowing, out of the ventricle and into the aorta, where oxygen rich blood can be delivered to the rest of the body. Due to the aortic valve insufficiency she also has a thickened mitral valve leaflet. She is currently prescribed a beta blocker (cardiac medication) to help decrease the workload of the heart while still supplying the body with the amount of blood it needs. This medication dose will need increased when she reaches 50lbs (she is currently 27lbs.) She will need a followup with a cardiologist at 1 yr of age or if she shows significant signs/symptoms of worsening heart disease developing earlier than that. Right now, Scarlett runs and plays with all the big dogs in her foster home and is on no activity restrictions. She also takes her medication like a champ (with peanut butter of course.) While we all at ODAAT realize she is absolutely ADORABLE, she is going to need (and we are looking for) a very special family. A family that realizes her life expectancy may be drastically shortened. A family that is going to be vigilant with her specialty vet needs. A family that is going to love her and cherish the time they have with her while she is here on earth. A family devoted to learning about her condition and taking the extra precautions when they are warranted. Our little Scarlett deserves the world and that's exactly what we will find her.
