Bear is only 2 years old and had lived his entire life chained to a tree. He was willingly surrendered to the shelter after his prior owners failed to make the necessary changes to his dog house so that it was legal shelter. Upon examination at the shelter he was found to have "happy tail" and his tests also came back positive for heartworm. He was set to be euthanized when ODAAT committed to him. Once in our care he had surgery on his tail to remove what was dead and he also began his 4 week heartworm treatment. He was not symptomatic from the heartworm so a full long term recovery is expected. Bear is a highly active dog and would do best with an active family. He is a strong prey drive and will follow his nose. For those reasons he will need a secured fenced in yard. He has been extremely successful with house training and will whine when he needs to go out. He is also crate trained and leash trained but does pull on a leash and is still working on those skills. He will ride well in the car as long as he is crated. In Bear's prior life he was not fed on a consistent basis, so he is treat and food motivated. We do not suggest young or small kids for him as he is still learning manners when it comes to food. These manners will need followed through with to be successful. Prior to his medical treatments he did well with the other large dog in his foster home. Due to his activity level restrictions during treatment, they have been kept separated because we want Bear to make a full recovery without complications. The Humane officer that was on the property of his former owner stated that he did have contact outside with the small dogs there and did not seem to mind them, he was only interested in human contact. Bear has made many improvements since being in foster. He craves attention and affection. He does take a little time to warm up to people but once he feels he can trust them, its over :). He loves to get rubs and stare up at you with puppy dog eyes. He will need a home with love and patience, one that will continue to work with him and provide him with the exercise he was robbed of over his young years.
